At the end of the semester, reviewing what I have learnt, there are some difficulties in my writing. I have taken one of FASS module, GEK1003, an introduction to political science. There is a term paper required in this module. In the process of writing the paper, I find the improvement which is required in my later English language learning.
The first one is organization. As an argumentative essay, it is required to give a clear thesis statement and some opposite ideas which are stong and persuasive not weak like a straw man. I have met the problem about how to organize the opposite ideas and rebuttal them clearly. And I have failed to link the example with my supporting idea, because I have first given my idea, then following the example without showing the link. Also I didn’t give a clear roadmap about how my idea is going. This problem was very serious, and I have modified it after my friend’s peer reviewing.
Apart from this problem, another problem is that I am not very good at expressing my idea clearly. For example, when I want to show that nationalism is not good for a multiethnic-society. I have to show that ethnic group may have different interest needs. But I am not good at expressing it specifically. Sometimes the word is exaggerated and not convinced. In order to change such errors, I think I have to read more articles and memorize some sentence structure. Also I think I have to think more about how to make a clear structure.

E-portfolio 6
My common grammar mistakes are verb tense problems, and parallel structure, and fragments.
For the verb tenses problems, I always fail to identify the correct verb tenses. I can’t clarify the perfect and present verb tense. In my writing assignment 2, for instance, there is a sentence: Facing this energy crisis, many governments begin to invest into energy research and build nuclear energy plant to solve this problem.
Since the government has taken actions from past till mow, it is wrong to use present form, it should be: Facing this energy crisis, many governments have begun to invest into energy research and build nuclear energy plant to solve this problem.
Another one is Like in June 2007, for instance, thousands of people showed their opposition against the nuclear power building in Indonesia. Here it is wrong to use past form, but past perfect form because it has happened before June 2007, the correct form is Like in June 2007, for instance, thousands of people had showed their opposition against the nuclear power building in Indonesia. I will have to spend some time to learn how identify the correct sentence form.
My second grammar problem is parallel structure. There are some non-parallel problems in my writings, and here I show some standard problems from textbooks.
Eg1:
My English conversation class is made up of Chinese, Spaniards, and some are from Bosnia.
Corrected one: My English conversation class is made up of Chinese, Spaniards, and Bosnians.
Eg2
The students who do well attend class, they do their homework, and practice speaking in English.
Corrected one: The students who do well attend class, do their homework, and practice speaking in English.
Eg3
The teacher wanted to know which country we came from and our future goals.
Corrected one: The teacher wanted to know which country we came from and what our future goals were.
My third grammar problem is fragments. I am likely to neglect some elements in a sentence. Eg1
The subject I enjoyed the most in high school.
Corrected
The subject I enjoyed the most in high school was physics.
Eg2
The desire of all humankind to live in peace and freedom, for example.
Corrected
The desire of all humankind is to live in peace and freedom, for example.
I will try to avoid such grammar mistakes and spend some time to do the practice.

The goal of this work is to explore a low-pressure Carbon Filter Process technology, which is, an inline flue gas Filter that captures CO2 by a carbonaceous sorbent, and, more specifically, to evaluate its capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity, to scale them up to a Carbon Filter Process.
Firstly, this technology is beneficial to the environment. CO2 is the main cause of global warming. Carbon Filter Process is an efficient way to reduce CO2 emission without compromising industries’ developments. With this technology, more countries could participate in this beneficial activity to work together and protect the environment.
The second reason is that, the Carbon Filter Process does not cost a lot. This Carbon Filter Process requires neither expensive materials nor flue-gas compression; and it is easy to heat integrate with an existing or grassroots power plant without affecting the cost of the produced electricity too much.
Thirdly, by adopting this technology, the company can show its concerns towards the climate changes to the public and can gain a good reputation from this action. Corporate social responsibility is a hot and tough issue facing by big corporations nowadays and actually it is one of determinant factors of companies’ competitive strength. In conclusion, people should support the Carbon Filter Process. Not only because it is friendly to the environment and economy effective, but also our responsibility to the planet.

Carbon dioxide is a main problem since the industrial revolutions starts. Our round table discussion is about this topic. This work is motivated by the need for inexpensive carboncapture technology for combustion-based power plants. Such power plants produce electricity by converting coal or natural gas to carbon dioxide (CO2), which is normally vented as an 11%-12% component of flue gas that contains a balance of nitrogen and other minor components. Before I list down the advantages of utilizing this technology, let us look at some interesting topics about CO2 (carbon dioxide). Most of us may think C02 as a useless gas except in photosynthesis process, but actually, pure C02 plays a significant role in industries, especially in enhancing oil and methane recovery. So if we can get carbon-rich gas from the existing resources, just get it.Firstly, this technology is beneficial to the environment. CO2 is the main cause of global warming. Although there has been proposed several policies, such as the Kyoto Protocol, to establish a cooperation among countries to reduce the CO2 emission. However, Kyoto Protocol has not been fully accepted by all countries; since it may affect their industries’ developments. Carbon Filter Process is an efficient way to reduce CO2 emission without compromising industries’ developments. With this technology, more countries could participate in this beneficial activity to work together and protect the environment All these absorption, adsorption, and membrane approaches have been well-documented (see, for example, the reported work of rzog and Drake,1 Mimura et al.,2 White et al.,3 and Aaron and Tsouris4). The main directions of research aimed at future innovations are focused on developing novel CO2 separation materials, such as ionic liquids,5 ionic polymers,6-8 and nanosilica nd nanotube composites,9-11 just to mention recent examples from our laboratory; however, this is an active field of research in many other laboratories. One of the more popular research directions has been PSA using zeolite X13 and activated carbon, but only for sorption at elevated pressures (at least 2 bar). Zeolite 13X has higher capacity, but activated carbon is less expensive than zeolite and insensitive to moisture.20-26 Its surface properties can vary considerably, but its approximate pure-CO2 sorption capacity can be as high as 10 wt % and its carbon dioxide/nitrogen (CO2/ N2) selectivity is on the order of 10, at 1 bar and 25 °C.12-15 ther types of carbonaceous sorbents, such as charcoal and coal, have been studied in a different CO2 context;16-19 however, they have not been explored or proposed for carbon capture from flue gas yet. For example, in the context of displacing coal-bedmethane with CO2, it has been shown that virgin coal has a higher capacity for CO2 than it does for methane,19 again, only at elevated pressures. However, there are no references to lowpressure lue-gas CO2 sorption coupled with thermal regeneration.Maciej Radosz, Xudong Hu, Kaspars Krutkramelis, and Youqing Shen(29 April 2008) Flue-Gas Carbon Capture on Carbonaceous Sorbents: Toward aLow-Cost Multifunctional Carbon Filter for “Green” Energy Producers Retrieved 2rd Mar 2009Website http://pubs.acs.org on March 7, 2009

Summary on Jan 3oth
This lecture is mainly about the global warming and the emission of green-house gas. As we know, global warming is not a simply environmental problem. In fact, there are a number of people existed who are not believing what scientists are saying. Based on this background, three lecturers spread this topic in different parts, to analyze this problem through different angles.
The first lecturer, Prof. Andrew Palmer, from Civil engineering, showed us global warming is an indisputable problem and proposed several methods to deal with this problem. In his first part, he showed that green house gas is coming from the heat engine like car, and burning fossil fuels. His main concept is to fix the carbon dioxide gas into another form. It can be stored CO2 into certain containers made by high technology, and then remove them to a suitable location. Most possible spot is the bottom of Deep Ocean. Maybe outer space is possible too.
In the end, professor also left some questions for us to think, like whether the idea of storing CO2 is practical possible or not.
The second lecturer, Dr. Sowacool is from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. As a social scientist, he mainly talked something about the relationship between public policy and global warming. He pointed out that sometimes our technology is able to solve global warming ideal, if some ideas like renewable energy and electric car can be used largely. However, the fact is opposite; the policies made by the government sometimes are aimed to protect some groups’ interest which may contribute a lot of waste gas into the atmosphere.
The last presenter, Rajasekhar Bala, showed us some serious effects of global warming and gave other methods to solve this crisis. For example, he stressed the clash between large population and the limited natural resources. If human want to reduce the effect of global warming, he has to control human population to reduce the need for natural resources and the pollution to the environment.
From this lecture, I have realized that technology is improving, but the policy and the consciousness of protection environment needs to be improved at the time.

Policy about environmental protection
From the video, an inconvenient truth, global warming is a serious problem which may threaten the survival of our next generation. Since I am from Chinese, there are some rules made by the government to reduce the environmental pollution.
It is known as China is the center of world manufacturing industry which means that its strong economic power is on the base of high pollution cost. The government begins to worry about the negative effect on its economy from environmental problems, so a series of policies have been made to limit some industries’ behavior, like heavy air polluted industry. In 1983, Chinese government passed marine environment protection law. In 1989, Chinese government has produced the environment protection law, covered with water, air and land, and forbidden any activities engaged into environmental pollution. These laws are all aimed to prevent the environment pollution. From 2000, Chinese government introduced another critical word, “green GDP”, which means that government will focus on the results of the green GDP to judge local governors’’ job (normal GDP minus the cost of environment pollution during the current year)
Even though Chinese government has always tried to make some effort to reduce the environment pollution in water, air and land, its effort seems to be a bit weaker since the high speed of Chinese economic development. Chinese government has signed the Kyotol protocol to reduce emission of green-house gas from domestic factories. However, this will hurt the interests of local factories due to the high cost spent in the waste gas treatment. That’s why American refused to sign the contract.
Though there is a group of people whose interest may lose some, in general this is a good thing, air condition is critical to local citizens. If Chinese government can finally reach the goal of reducing emissions from heavy industry, it can improve air quality greatly. For example, in order to host Olympic Games, Beijing decided to remove all the polluted factories from the city. This affected Beijing’s GDP in the current year, but it did improve the air quality and it was welcomed by local citizens. From this example, it is surely that if Chinese can make a effort to reduce global warming, the overall benefits are greater than the loss during short period.

Entry 1
From the article and other information, it is a fact that manufacturing industry no longer plays a dominant role in pushing global economy. In contrast, whatever the job is for anyone, the society is demanding people with more skills and ability to overcome unforeseeable challenges. For engineering, people need to learn not only the simple techniques like the mechanisms or electronics, but the methodology. To be clearer, it is the ways of thinking and the passion to learn new things independently. It is not the lecturers or tutors’ job to help students build this thinking system. In order to gain the ability to face new challenges coming along with global era, two aspects are needed to take an attention.
The first one is to broaden background knowledge, including contents covered arts and social science, because it is a common case for engineering students who fail to know some simple and general knowledge. Thinking is very important. Reading can improve the depth of thinking and broaden people’s mind which is good for thinking in different ways. Moreover, it is possible for an engineer to step into political stage. If it is so, learning the knowledge about political science is very necessary. This example shows that it is hard to determine anyone’s future, so make a preparation is very important.
The second aspect is about practical ability. It is no longer enough to only know some basic background or some techniques. For an engineer, it is required to deal with practical problems instead of some abstract theory. That means people must gain an ability to convert the knowledge and skills learned from book into practical work. For example, financial crisis has affected manufacture industry as well as financial area. In order to survive from this disaster, it is not only to try to improve the quality of the products, but also the ability to broaden the existed market, to find new opportunity to break the bottle neck. This is called for the training during the time in university. People can do the internship
